Remembering Paul Dayton
QUEENSBURY -- Paul Delbert Dayton died Nov. 14, 2009, at the Stanton Nursing Home having been a life-long resident of Corinth.
He was born June 29, 1923, in Corinth to Wilber Thomas and Jessie Belle (White) Dayton.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Mary (Carter) Dayton (1923 to 1982) who he married July 17, 1941, and his second wife, Carolyn Ruth (Spinner) (Brabon) Dayton (1933 to 2003) who he married Feb. 19, 1983.
He was predeceased by a sister, Flossie Denton and three brothers, the Rev. Charles Dayton, Dr. Wilber Dayton Jr. and Chester Dayton and son-in-law, Keith Tyler.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary (and William) Fuller of Corinth and Priscilla Tyler of Potts Grove, Pa.; three sons, James (and Judy) of Byron Center, Mich., John (and Lori) of Corinth and Stephen (and Dr. Nancy) of Gas City, Ind.; one stepdaughter, Marlene (and Bob) McCarthy of Moria, N.Y.; two stepsons, Keith (and Betsy) Brabon of Malone, N.Y., and Lyndon (and Lisa) Brabon of Huntsville, Ala.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Paul graduated from Corinth Central School, Class of 1940.
He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran (1942 to 1945) serving as petty officer first class. His military stint found him installing and field testing radar on Naval aircraft. He was a part of a pioneering project to perfect radar as a means of identifying targets on bombing runs. After the war, he chose to return to his beloved Corinth instead of embarking on an international career in technology. He and Chester Dayton were partners in Dayton Brothers Lumber Co., which he operated for 51 years before retiring in 1998.
He was an active, life-long member of the Corinth Wesleyan Church where he held many offices including Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, member of the board of trustees, member of the board of administration, building committee chairman, Young People's Society sponsor and choir member. In addition, he held many offices in the Champlain Conference/District of the Wesleyan Church.
Paul loved the Adirondacks including hunting, hiking, cruising and making his living from the forest. However, most important to him was his love, obedience and service to Jesus Christ.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Corinth Wesleyan Church, 292 River St., with the Rev. Leonard Humbert (nephew) and the Rev. Dick Engert, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Corinth Wesleyan Church, 292 River St., Corinth, NY 12822.
